Personal Profile

Since the inception of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Water Power Program in 2009, Al LiVecchi has collaborated closely with DOE and NLR leadership to establish and expand core teams and portfolios across both hydropower and marine energy. By leveraging a broad range of staff expertise and laboratory capabilities—within NLR and through external partnerships—he has championed innovation, technology advancement, and deployment in both sectors. To effectively manage NLR’s water power program, LiVecchi draws on extensive experience gained at a range of organizations including a large R&D company, a technology start-up, and a management consultancy. His background spans basic research, product development, strategic planning, commercialization, partnership development, and organizational development.

Professional Experience

Prior to joining NLR, LiVecchi managed Strategy and Business Development at an early stage R&D informatics company and worked as a management consultant on a diverse set of engagements ranging from technology market opportunity assessments to information management optimization to support R&D decision making and planning. LiVecchi was also a senior staff scientist at Baxter CardioVascular, where he conducted research on the failure mechanisms of heart valve implants and developed design modifications to increase their operational lives.
