Personal Profile

Greg Stark is the hydropower technical lead at NREL. As a part of this role, he leads the Water Power Technologies Office's Operations and Planning research area for their new HydroWIRES initiative (U.S. Department of Energy).

Stark has more than 17 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, and he has participated in the planning of numerous conferences. Prior to NREL, Stark was a principal at Building Synergies, LLC, a firm specializing in high-performance building simulation. While there, Stark developed the first CAD-based building energy modeling tool for Macintosh computers. 

Research Interests

Stark's research interests include the optimization of energy use across multi-domain systems (e.g., water and electricity) and integrating new generation into existing electrical grids, approaching both subjects from a combined systems engineering, finance, and economics perspective. His work has involved the design, development, and use of large-scale energy storage to make use of large amounts of renewable energy possible.
