Jianping Yu studies cyanobacteria, eukaryotic algae, and other microbes to understand molecular mechanisms that control photosynthesis, and to develop biotechnology for biofuels, biofertilizer, and chemicals production, and for environmental service such as wastewater treatment and metal extraction. His current research includes isolation and characterization of new algae strains;  genetic engineering of cyanobacteria to produce ethylene, organic acids, bioplastic monomer and polymer, and nitrogen fertilizer; biocontainment of engineered microbes; energy regulation and carbon/nitrogen/phosphorus metabolism in cyanobacteria; and microbial activities in geological hydrogen production.
