Max Kudisch’s research focuses on mechanistic studies of photocatalytic reactions useful for organic synthesis. In particular, nickel-catalyzed methods have risen to the forefront of the organic chemist's toolbox in the last decade and are beginning to be scaled up and applied industrially. However, mechanistic understanding has lagged behind this rapid growth. For example, the conversion of pre-catalysts to their active forms in carbon-carbon bond forming reactions is poorly understood. We are utilizing time-resolved spectroscopic methods to generate and elucidate the role of transient intermediates in these systems with the goal of improving these reactions through rational design.
