Peter Dahl joined NREL in 2023 to study the mechanism of light-driven reduction of nitrogen gas to ammonia using biohybrid complexes of quantum dots and nitrogenase enzyme. The reduction of nitrogen to ammonia is an energy intensive reaction, which consumes up to 2 % of the global energy supply. By studying mechanisms for activating biological catalysts, such as nitrogenase, with light, Dahl hopes to identify a path toward an efficient alternative for industrial ammonia synthesis.
