Personal Profile

Robert Raye is a research engineer in the Hydropower and Water Systems Deployment group at NREL. His work focuses primarily on pre-commercial water power systems testing, where he leads development of instrumentation, control, and data acquisition solutions for design and performance evaluations, which includes NREL’s Modular Ocean Data Acquisition measurement platform. Rob has worked to advance marine renewable technologies for over 20 years and has been involved in site characterization studies, technical assessments, and concept maturation. At NREL, Rob has promoted operational safety principles and helped develop a technical quality assurance framework.

Prior to NREL, Rob was a metocean engineer at Shell, where he was responsible for ocean measurement and monitoring programs used for design criteria and operational support in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska. Rob has served on the working committees of studies sponsored by the National Academies of Science and American Petroleum Council and was a member of the Data Management and Communications committees for the Gulf Coast Ocean Observing System  and Alaska Ocean Observing System , where he was also on the board of directors.
