    Abstract

    Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen. It is my pleasure to be here today to brief you on the Advanced Battery Environmental, Health, and Safety Program, conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, U.S.A. The focus of the program is advanced batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), and the objectives of the program are to assess the environmental, health, andsafety issues pertaining to advanced batteries. These issues include recycling, shippping, intrinsic material hazards, occupational safety, in-vehicle safety, and cell and battery safety. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory, specializing in renewable energy and advanced tranportation system technologies.
