Abstract
In 1986, Pierce Transit, based in Tacoma, Washington, made a commitment to the future of the transportation industry and to the environment by deciding to put buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) into everyday service. Ten years later, 58 of the 193 transit buses in the company's fleet are CNG powered. This document relates the history of the program and lessons learned; costcomparisons; and detailed results of emissions, reliability, and fuel efficiency studies done on the Pierce Transit fleet.
