Assessment of Solar Radiation Resources in Saudi Arabia

    Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

    Abstract

The King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory have joined forces to undertake a project to assess solar radiation resources in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This project, which began in 1993 and will be concluded in 1997, has established a state-of-the-art solar radiation network. Each of the 12 stations in the network measures global horizontal, direct normal, and diffuse horizontal radiation using thermopile radiometers. Concurrent with surface measurements of solar radiation, the Saudi Meteorological and Environmental Protection Administration is collecting METEOSAT images of Saudi Arabia (METEOSAT is a geosynchronous satellite operated by the European Space Agency). During 1997, a combination of surface, satellite, and modeled datawill be used to produce a high-resolution (40 km) grid of solar radiation data for the entire country.
