Benefits and Risks of New Polymers in the Current and Future Recycling System

Research output: NRELPresentation

Abstract

New plastics are increasingly being developed to address challenges around plastic pollution and end-of-life management. However, the incorporation of these new polymers into the existing plastic ecosystem raises numerous risks, as well as some benefits. This flash talk briefly discusses how new plastics could raise contamination levels and prevent mechanical recycling, how we could mitigate that risk by improving education around recycling collection, and how new plastics could potentially reduce the cost and environmental impact of certain chemical recycling technologies.
