Abstract
The recent conflict in the Persian Gulf has reminded us as a nation of the importance of developing our own stable, renewable supplies of energy. We are also frequently reminded of the toll our dependence on petroleum is taking on our environment. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) conducts a program of research designed to develop new energy technologies for eventually displacing petroleum with minimal or no environmental impact. Biomass and wastes research at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) is a component of the DOE program. An overview of SERI's program and research branches is presented; two research areas in each branch are highlighted.
