Bringing Wind Power Back East: Redesign, Installation and Initial Operating Results for the Original ESI-80 in Massachusetts

    Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

    Abstract

The University of Massachusetts research wind turbine is now up and running in the hills of western Massachusetts. In late 1991 the tubine, the Proto-1 ESI-80, was purchased by the Renewable Energy Research Laboratory, RERL, and moved east from the Altamont Pass, California. Over the past three years the turbine has undergone many design changes, a site was selected, zoning variances granted, foundations built and the largest wind turbine in New England installed. At the present time the turbine is operating in an attended test phase using most of the turbine's original relay control logic. A new programmable controller is being installed. The turbine has produced over 27.5 MWh during the 275 hours of operation since it was brought on line in January of 1995. The initial stages ofthis project were the topic of a paper presented at the 1993 AWEA conference, Refernce 1. The present paper describes the progress since that time, where the project stands now, some operational results and our plans or the future.
