    Abstract

    This is the premier issue of the quarterly newsletter of the Climate Challenge Program, a joint utility/government program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with an emphasis on voluntary, cost-effective actions. The lead story details how the actions taken by electric utilities are expected to result in an annual reduction of more than 44 million metric tons of carbon-equivalent emissions inthe United States in the year 2000. Other stories look at some of the Climate Challenge industry-wide initiatives designed to help achieve this goal.
