Commercial Building Hot Water Strategies: A Short Guide

Research output: NRELFact Sheet

Abstract

Commercial boilers use a fuel source - often combustible gas or oil, but sometimes electricity - to generate hot water or steam that is distributed throughout a building for space heating and/or domestic hot water. In general, boilers become less efficient and less reliable as they age. Even if a boiler is still working, you should start planning for replacement when it is around 15 to 20 years old or when maintenance needs increase. The list of equipment options for replacing gas-fired boilers is getting longer. It is important to consider the options early to find the best solution for your facility before an emergency replacement is required. Building decarbonization, additional hot water delivery, energy consumption, cost, and changes in building loads all need to be considered. An open-minded and creative approach can lead to a new, energy efficient and cost-effective system that meets your facility's needs. This factsheet helps building owners and managers plan for boiler replacement early, understand the options, and find the most effective solutions for their situation.
