Current Status of Environmental, Health, and Safety Issues of Nickel Metal-Hydride Batteries for Electric Vehicles

    Research output: NRELTechnical Report

    Abstract

This report identifies important environment, health, and safety issues associated with nickel metal-hydride (Ni-MH) batteries and assesses the need for further testing and analysis. Among the issues discussed are cell and battery safety, workplace health and safety, shipping requirements, and in-vehicle safety. The manufacture and recycling of Ni-MH batteries are also examined. This report alsooverviews the 'FH&S' issues associated with other nickel-based electric vehicle batteries; it examines venting characteristics, toxicity of battery materials, and the status of spent batteries as a hazardous waste.
