Abstract

A cooling tower is a heat rejection device that uses an evaporative cooling process to reject heat to the atmosphere from water cooled chilled water plant. Cooling towers are commonly applied to water cooled chilled water plants in large commercial buildings. The Silver Bullet alternative water treatment (AWT) technology is a non-chemical-based cooling tower water treatment technology. It is advertised as a simpler water treatment technology that can reduce cooling tower blowdown by increasing the CoC, which reduces monthly chemical costs, monthly operation and maintenance costs, and the amount of scale that collects on condenser water tubes and cooling towers. The primary focus of this evaluation was measuring cooling tower make up water usage pre- and post- installation of the AWT. In addition, annual reductions in cooling tower chemical costs, monthly water chemistry reports, ease of installation, and overall cost effectiveness were evaluated.
