Abstract
The distributed utility (DU) is an emerging concept in which modular generation and storage technologies sited near customer loads in distribution systems and specifically targeted demand-side management programs are used to supplement conventional central station generation plants to meet customer energy service needs. Research has shown that implementation of the DU concept could providesubstantial benefits to utilities. This report, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, summarizes the cost, performance, and environmental and siting characteristics of existing and emerging modular generation and storage technologies that apply to the DU concept. It is a practical reference guide for utility planners and engineers seeking information on DU technology options.
