Effects of Feedback on Residential Electricity Consumption: A Literature Review

    Research output: NRELTechnical Report

    Abstract

This report reviews 17 studies assessing the effect of information feedback on residential electricity consumption. Most of the studies were conducted in experimental or quasi-experimental conditions. The study findings, taken together, provide some evidence that feedback is effective in reducing electricity consumption, although questions remain concerning the conditions under which feedback canbest be provided. Reductions in consumption found in most of the studies ranged from 5% to 20%.
