Abstract

The effects of grain boundaries on the performance of thin film polycrystalline solar cells are evaluated. The dependence of the minority carrier lifetime on grain diameter is investigated. These data are used, in turn, to determine the dependence of the collection efficiency on grain size for various grain boundary conditions (low, medium and high angle grain boundaries) in heterojunction solar cells. The model is compared with a geometrically derived one to explain the dependence of short circuit current on grain size in the CdS/CuInSe2 thin film heterostructure.
