Abstract
The GEOPHIRES tool has emerged as a key open-source techno-economic simulator for geothermal electricity and heating and cooling applications, with increasing adoption by both national laboratory teams and external researchers. In response to this growing interest, NREL coordinated a workshop in 2024 to bring together GEOPHIRES developers, users, and stakeholders to identify high-priority improvements, success stories, challenges, and the broader role of the tool in the geothermal modeling ecosystem. Building on insights from this workshop, 2025 activities focused on updating the GEOPHIRES codebase to improve consistency with other DOE-supported tools (GETEM, SAM, and ATB) and reflect the latest in geothermal cost, fluid property, reservoir, and power plant performance data. This paper presents the technical updates made to GEOPHIRES, highlights new modeling capabilities and assumptions, and outlines how these changes enhance alignment across the DOE geothermal analysis suite. Additionally, a new user guide and training resources were developed to support both novice and expert users in utilizing the improved interface and simulation workflows. These updates position GEOPHIRES as a more integrated, accurate, and user-friendly tool for geothermal techno-economic analysis, supporting future research, policy, and project development.
