    Abstract

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory manages a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy that assesses the environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) issues of advanced electric vehicle batteries. The program examines cell and battery safety, workplace health and safety, recycling, materials toxicity, and shipping issues pertaining to batteries that may be used in the mid- to long-term. This document will focus on cell and battery safety, shipping, and recycling of nickel metal hydride, lithium ion, lithium polumer, and sodium nickel chloride batteries.
