Environmental, Health and Safety Issues of Lithium-Ion Electric Vehicle Batteries

    Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

    Abstract

An analysis of environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) issues is an important part of the commercialization of any new technology. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has reviewed (EH&S) issues of selected mid- to long-term EV battery technologies. NREL assesses health and safety, and environmental and shipping issues with inustry, other national laboratories, and government agencies. NREL publishes reports and chairs the ad hoc Advanced Battery Readiness Working group, a government/industry forum that addresses EH&S issues. NREL has reviewed sodium/sulfur, sodium/nickel chloride, nickel-metal hydride, and lithium-polymer batteries. This document focuses on the status of EH&S issues of lithium-ion batteries, based on an NREL report and other sources. The proprietary statusof some information about EV-sized lithium-ion batteries restricted the reivew to battery materials reported in the open literature and small batteries already developed.
