Grid-Friendly Renewable Energy: Solar and Wind Participation in Automatic Generation Control Systems

Research output: NRELTechnical Report

Abstract

This paper focuses on emerging technological and regulatory considerations of using solar and wind generators to provide essential reliability services through participation in area-wide automatic generation control (AGC) systems. AGC systems enable a grid operator to centrally and automatically manage the output of interconnected generators, storage devices, and controllable loads to maintain reliable and safe system operations. The paper highlights recent experiences of solar and wind on AGC, as well as recent developments that may enable VRE to participate in AGC in the near future.
