Abstract

The salient aspects of the hydrogen economy, within the context of a renewable, sustainable energy system, are discussed. Hydrogen has several important chemical properties that affect its use as a fuel. Technologies to convert hydrogen into useful energy must be further improved to increase performance and reduce cost for hydrogen to become a viable fuel. Continued R&D is needed for the production of hydrogen from renewable sources so that hydrogen from non-carbon emitting sources such as solar and wind energy, can become cost-competitive.
