Investigating the Micon 65 Turbine Using YawDyn with Simulated Turbulence

    Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

    Abstract

A model of the Micon 65 wind turbine was investigated in YawDyn using three dimensional simulated wind turbulence generated by SNL Wind-3D. A sensitivity study was conducted on parameters in simulated turbulence as well as the dynamic stall and dynamic inflow operations in YawDyn. Turbulence parameters investigated include wind speed, grid density, and wind components. Further investigationsusing turbulence generated from various spectra were also conducted. Where possible, field test data was consulted to determine the relative accuracy of contrasting results. This study showed limited dependence on grid density, vertical wind component, and dynamic inflow. The damping effect of dynamic stall was seen to be profound in this study. Effect of each parameter generally increased withwind speed. The investigation of various turbulence spectra demonstrated the importance of accurately characterizing the wind environment. The conclusions reached are, by nature of this study, specific to the Micon 65 wind turbine. However, useful general conclusions on the importance of each of the above parameter can be drawn.
