Abstract
Under a contract from the Deparment of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and support from the Brooklyn Union Gas Company (BUG) and Northern Illinois Gas Company (NIGAS), the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) is evaluating four state-of-the-art electronic, closed-loop natural gas vehcile (NGV) conversion systems. The four kits include an Impco adaptive digital processor(AFCP) system, Mogas system, the Gaseous Fuel Injection (GFI) system from Stewart & Stevenson, and an Automotive Natural Gas Inc. (ANGI) Advanced Low Emission Vehicle System (ALEVS). Conversion system evaluation and testing incuded ease of installation, completeness of installation manuals, emission testing per 40 CFR Part 86, and driveability. All testing was performed with a 1993 ChevroletLumina equipped with a 3.1 L MPFI V6 engine. Each kit was emission tested using three different certified compositions of natural gas, representing the 10th, mean and 90th percentile gas compositions distributed in the United States.
