    Abstract

    This issue features articles on new semiconductor materials that could help U.S. manufacturers regain the lead in the growing world markets for photovoltaic systems; improving our nation's energy security (and the economy's bottom like by nearly $50 billion) with renewable, non-imported biofuels such as ethanol; how the U.S. wind industry hopes to compete and survive both deregulation (and theattendant major restructuring) of the utilities industry and increased competition from European companies with the help of new turbine designs from NREL; and a look at a recent NREL report that reveals how states are tallying the environmental costs associated with energy use.
