Abstract

Photovoltaics (PV), while still a small part of global electricity generation, has demonstrated a remarkable track record of of growth and cost reduction, becoming the most cost effective and sustainable source of electricity in a growing number of locations worldwide. This article, the outcome of a recent gathering of PV experts at the 3rd Multi-Terawatt Workshop, addresses future global energy and electricity demand, anticipating high electrification and economic global development, recent progress in PV integration, and assesses how coupling in innovation, PV deployment, storage and sector coupling have and will continue to dramatically cahnge and accelerate the PV landscape if technology, system integration and policy align. A sustained global growth rate of PV of 25% over the next decade would enable a viable path to 2050 greenhouse gas mitigation targets.
