Abstract

The measurement and modeling of immersed coil heat exchangers used in residential solar domestic hot water systems is discussed. Two smooth-coil and two finned-coil heat exchangers, with heat transfer areas of 1. 7 and 2. 5 m**2, were tested. The measured U-values ranged from 100 W/m**2 at low temperature differences to as high as 1200 W/m**2 at high temperature differences. The analytical model developed agreed reasonably well with the experimental results.
