U.S. Photovoltaic Patents: 1951-1983

    Research output: NRELMarketing

    Abstract

This document comprises 1,487 U.S. patents on terrestrial power photovoltaic applications, systems, components, materials, manufacturing, and support functions. These patents were issued from 1951 through 1983; no patents were found in 1950. Entries were isolated by searching USPA, the database of the U.S. Patent Office. The final search strategy retrieved all patents under the class 'Batteries,Thermoelectric and Photoelectric' and the subclasses 'Photoelectric,' 'Testing,' and 'Applications' as well as patents which contained the words 'photovoltaic(s)' or 'solar cell(s)' and their derivatives. A manual search of patents in the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) Patent File augmented the data base search. After the initial list was compiled, patents for the following categorieswere excluded: space photovoltaic technology, use of the photovoltaic effect for detectors, and subjects only peripherally concerned with photovoltaics.
