What Is Power System Curtailment?

Research output: NRELFact Sheet

Abstract

Curtailment is the intentional reduction of instantaneous power from non- dispatchable variable renewable energy (VRE) resources like wind and solar photovoltaics relative to what would naturally be available from the wind and the sun. This curtailed energy is the difference between the total available energy and actual production. This fact sheet provides a summary of curtailment in power systems and presents selected insights into specific ways in which curtailment is implemented by a selection of System Operators.
