Xylose Fermentation to Ethanol: A Review

    Research output: NRELTechnical Report

    Abstract

The U.S. Department of Energy/National Renewable Energy Laboratory Ethanol from Biomass Program is evaluating a variety of fermentation-based bioconversion processes for converting xylose and other pentose sugars to ethanol at an industrial scale. The past several years have seen tremendous progress in the understanding of xylose metabolism and in the identification, characterization, anddevelopment of strains with improved xylose fermentation characteristics. This report reviews the current state of xylose fermentation technology, focusing on recent improvements in the direct fermentation of xylose.
